Have you ever heard the quote: ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.’?
Some interpret this saying as a warning to plan ahead. But I think it’s a reminder that you don’t always know what you’ve planted till it’s fully grown.
This is what building a career is.
When I completed my post-graduate diploma in Criminology, Australia was in the middle of a recession, and my dream of joining the legal industry was very quickly shattered.
Finding any job was a challenge- every company was flooded with applications.
I had knockback after knockback.
I was grateful that I was able to hold a casual job in hospitality…
But eventually, I received a letter to say that my application to be a Trainee Employment Officer with the Federal Government had been successful.
The process would be long and laborious, but I didn’t care. I was going to be employed on a permanent full-time basis in a workforce where that seemed impossible.
12 months later, after a very intense application process, I was a ‘Recruitment Consultant’, living in my element by using my studies and my passion for human behavior to help people find work!
After 3 years in Perth, I decided it was time for a change, and moved from my Federal Government role into a private recruitment agency.
I was reinvigorated in my role, and it was there that my specialisation in Accounting and Finance began.
I was never good at maths in school, and yet I found I have a passion for statistics and analysis (it helps that I married an Accountant).
After 25 years of agency recruiting, I moved in-house. Whilst it was a great and challenging experience, I realised that I had agency blood in my veins!
My current role at empire group became clear the moment I met the leaders of the business.
Finally, I could work in the Legal Industry, and still use all my previous experience to help clients and candidates find each other in the legal and accounting professions.
My 20 years of experience coaching, mentoring, and leading teams through the recruitment space has afforded me the skills to succeed at 360 recruitment.
The seed I planted with my post-graduate diploma finally grew into what I always wanted it to be. Is it too dramatic to say that dreams really do come true?
The girl in the photo below didn't know what seeds she was planting, but I'm glad she planted them.
Have you realised what trees you planted way back when? What dreams did you want to achieve?
I’d love to hear about the seeds you started with, and what they grew into (or see if I can help you grow them!)
